La contaminación por microplásticos es un tema de gran preocupación en la actualidad ya que se han detectado altas concentraciones en el océano, fundamentalmente en los giros subtropicales que acumulan este tipo de residuos.

Hoy en día todavía se desconocen los efectos que pueda tener a largo plazo este tipo de contaminación en los ecosistemas y la biota marina.

El presente estudio tiene como objetivo cuantificar y caracterizar los microplásticos y el zooplancton neustónico en aguas de la Macaronesia, una zona poco estudiada hasta la fecha.

Nuestros resultados muestran una gran variabilidad en la concentración de microplásticos con valores entre 15,283 items/Km² en Los Gigantes (Tenerife, Canary Islands) y 1,007,872 items/Km² en Las Canteras (Gran Canaria, Canary Islands).

Los principales tipos de microplásticos encontrados fueron fragmentos y fibras. Las abundancias de zooplancton también fueron muy variables entre las distintas zonas de muestreo, siendo los principales componentes copépodos y huevos. En Las Canteras, la zona de mayor acumulación, para la fracción 1-5mm se encontró el doble de micropláticos que de zooplankton en peso seco.

Estos valores ponen de manifiesto el potencial peligro que supone la contaminación por microplásticos -y sus contaminantes químicos asociados- para la biota marina, especialmente para los grandes filtradores.

Andrej Abramic is leading the Plasmar Project that builds a computerised decision support system for MSP.

An EU directive obliges all coastal member states to develop their MSP plans by March 2021 — but there are good reasons to do so besides the directive MarSP Project.

The MSP Catalogue is available.

Catalogue of marine geographic data of the Macaronesia developed by the Ecoaqua University Institute is now available.

The objective of this catalogue is to compile all the marine geographic information in the area of the Macaronesia in order to support the processes of Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP).

The implementation of this catalogue is part of the objectives of the activity 2.2.2 and has given rise to an inventory with all the information gathered during the development of the PLASMAR project is collected.

The catalogue has references on a wide range of subjects and suppliers, and has two types of classifications to facilitate searches, including themes normalised by the INSPIRE directive (https://inspire.ec.europa.eu/theme).

The catalogue currently has more than 500 records, and this number is expected to increase in the coming weeks.
